Virgin Frozen Margarita

A Frozen Margarita Mocktail Jimmy Buffet would be proud of!

Instead of a traditional salted rim, which really only works if your Margarita contains tequila, this recipe uses green sugar, the kind you buy to decorate cookies. It’s a refreshing mocktail guaranteed to help you chill out on a warm summer day, or negate the capsaicin impact of spicy Mexican food.

Ingredients

  • 6 ounces frozen limeade concentrate, thawed (like, Minute Maid)
  • ¼ cup orange juice (like, Simply Orange)
  • ¼ cup simple syrup
  • juice of 1 fresh lime
  • juice of 1 fresh lemon
  • 4 cups hard ice
  • 2 tsp green sugar sprinkles (like, Betty Crocker)
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges for garnish

Instructions

  1. When squeezing the limes, put a tablespoon or so on a 6" salad plate.
  2. Place the green sugar sprinkles on a separate 6" salad plate and spread them out.
  3. Dip the rim of each Margarita glass in the lime juice, and then coat each rim with the green sugar.
  4. Place the limeade concentrate, orange juice, simple syrup, lemon juice and remaining lime juice in a blender and fill with hard ice.
  5. Blend on high until all the ice has become slushy.
  6. Carefully pour the concoction into Margarita glasses, garnish with a fresh lime wedge and serve.

Notes

  • The term "hard ice" is an old bartender term from the days when a mixologist would use an ice pick on a large block of ice to pick off large chunks of ice to make a cocktail. Today, the term "hard ice" is to distinguish it from "crushed ice" or "shaved ice."
